AURA Skanderbeg Square Apartments is located on Rruga e Dibrës, close to Tirana’s central historic district. From the property, visitors can explore the main square, Ottoman-era landmarks, museums, and the traditional market area on foot.
Skanderbeg Square is Tirana’s principal public square and the city’s central point of reference. It contains the equestrian statue of Skanderbeg, Albania’s national hero, as well as open paved spaces, trees, fountains, and several important civic and cultural buildings. The square is also the setting for public events and provides access to many of central Tirana’s principal attractions.
On the square’s southern side, the National Historical Museum presents Albania’s history through archaeological material, historical objects, documents, and works of art. Its large mosaic on the main façade is one of the recognizable visual features of central Tirana. The museum’s collections cover periods ranging from antiquity to the modern era; visitors should check current arrangements before planning an interior visit.
Near the eastern side of Skanderbeg Square are several closely grouped landmarks:
- Et’hem Bey Mosque is an 18th- and early-19th-century mosque known for its painted interior decoration, including floral and landscape motifs. It remains an important religious and architectural monument in the center of Tirana.
- Tirana Clock Tower, beside the mosque, is one of the city’s historic landmarks. Built in the early 19th century and subsequently modified, it offers a clear example of the traditional civic architecture associated with the square.
- Bunk’Art 2 is a museum installed in a Cold War-era nuclear bunker near the square. Its exhibitions examine the history of Albania’s communist security and political persecution, using archival material and preserved underground spaces.
House of Leaves, a short walk from the square, occupies a former building associated with Albania’s communist-era surveillance service. The museum documents the work of the security apparatus and the impact of surveillance on individuals and society through photographs, documents, equipment, and personal accounts.
To the east, Pazari i Ri, or the New Bazaar, combines a traditional market area with shops, cafés, and restaurants. The district is recognized for its covered market structure and food stalls offering produce and other local goods. It is also a practical area for observing everyday commercial life in central Tirana.
Further southeast, the Tanners’ Bridge is a restored Ottoman-period stone bridge. Once connected to routes leading toward the eastern approaches of the city, it is now a small historic monument among Tirana’s modern streets and buildings.
